Brooklyn is the worst place on earth for a writer,” says Sara Gran–but what does she know about the cement trucks of Astoria?

The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms

Creature feature from 1953; essentially a remake of King Kong with nothing to recommend it but the early Harryhausen animation. Nukes unleash a rampaging dinosaur, nukes finish him off. The finale at Coney Island–the heroes ride the Cyclone in full Homer Simpson hazmat getup–is worth catching on late night TV sometime.

Man Push Cart

September 7th, 2006

I’m not sure why I assumed for the longest time that this was a documentary–it’s not. It’s a feature about one of those guys you see all the time in New York, pushing (pulling, really) their bagel-and-coffee cart through nutso Manhattan traffic. It’s not what you’d call a feel good movie, but it’s very graceful. Proper About.com review forthcoming any minute now. Opens tomorrow.

Man Push Cart, Ramin Bahrani, 2005. ***

No New York street scene is complete without the vendors who keep Manhattan well fed and over-caffeinated–but until now, the movies didn’t bother with their stories. Ramin Bahrani’s Man Push Cart remedies the oversight with a tale of dignity and quiet suffering. With Ahmad Razvi and Leticia Dolera. Man Push Cart opens tomorrow.
