Particle

Particle sounds like rowdy Sector 9. They’re groove, instrumental handmade techno, comes at four speeds, and when they’re really hitting hyper warp, they go go go, like maniac kings of the vamp. Last night at the Bowery Ballroom was their 300th show, and they had interesting guests sitting in, without whom I might have gotten slightly bored. The keyboard player is much more talented than anybody else in the band. Still, a ravin’ good time.
Catie Curtis

Yes, lots of lesbians like to come see Catie Curtis. Marcy got free tickets from WFUV, so we saw her set at Joe’s Pub a little tired & worn, but her charisma and voice did the trick: a very enjoyable show, serious and heartfelt.
Beat Radio

Beat Radio rocked Piano’s last night. Straight-ahead rock’n roll, and there ain’t nothing wrong with that.

What can I say? The Rebirth Brass Band is as much fun on a yucky winter night on 42nd Street as it was on sweltering summer nights on Magazine or at Tip’s. You can’t help shaking your ass when that tuba blows.

Rockin! I was on the floor for this very fine show by the Trey Anastasio Orchestra, dancing my way through a Last Tube opener, an epic Night Speaks, a weird Sand, a glowstick war, and a big fat Push On encore. Let’s hope the Phish reunion won’t break up TAB because TAB is breaking new ground every time I see them. They’re growing jazzier, Peter Applebaum broke out an accordion last night, and the new songs are excellent. Since all the focus is on Phish right now, the scene was wonderfully mellow, too.
