Feels Like Home
February 14th, 2004
Norah Jones’ second album is as exciting as a loofah sponge. I mean, wake me when it’s over. I mean, there’s nothing wrong with it, nothing at all, nothing whatsoever, and don’t you think perhaps that’s a problem?
A Rush of Blood to the Head
November 10th, 2003
There’s something about most contemporary male rock singers that immediatly turns me off–this mealy-mouthed proto-Bono sensitive-guy shtick, like they’re all Dave Matthews clones? That thing? I can’t stand it. Chris “I do Gwyneth” Martin is no exception. Coldplay may be ripping off Radiohead, but some of this stuff sounds pretty good…and strangely familiar, probably from commercials or because you can’t live far enough outside of mainstream culture not to recognize “Clocks” or whatever it’s called? I got this album for Our Dear Leader, but I might give it a second listen.
Kill Bill
November 10th, 2003
And while I’m reviewing music, let it be known that I thought the soundtrack to Kill Bill was the best thing about it. Marcy divested me of that notion today: “that’s a bunch of novelty crap that’s funny exactly once,” was her verdict. Still, there must be something like a total of three kick ass tracks on there–Tomoyasu Hotei, Quincy Jones’ Ironside, and half of “Misunderstood,” perhaps?
Let It Be … Naked
November 10th, 2003
Maybe I didn’t pay close enough attention, but to me this ostensibly “new” Beatles album sounds exactly like the old Let It Be. Which was fine to begin with.
The Illustrated Band
November 9th, 2003
For Vida Blue’s second album, Page added the Spam Allstars to the basic lineup of keys, Oteil, and Russell Batiste. The result is a latin-flavored four-track workout that’s a little too nervous for my current state of mind. I like the vibe, though, and I expect this to grow on me.
Philsh

Liquid melodies and muscular crystal notes from the man with the most spidery touch since Garcia died. Serious stuff–sublime in the true Kantian sense.
