Small indie satire about a reality TV show with Don McKellar. Will open at Anthology sometime soon. Good performances, good script, more laughs than 40-Year Old Virgin. (But that’s easy.)

Watching this cheerful little flick is a little like being put into a stress position yourself.

Surprisingly good, and surprisingly close to the graphic novel. There are a few significant changes, but I don’t see nearly enough reason for Alan Moore to take his name off. This still feels very much like his baby. I don’t think it’s nearly as naive, muddled, or pretentious as some people seem to think.

1991 historical drama about a bunch of viola players, starring Gerard Depardieu and his son. There’s the promise of some sexy sisters competing for young Guillaume, but it’s never paid off. Gerard doesn’t have much to do but pose as ugly aristocratic fop. By the end, you wish they’d just smash their fucking violas and get it over with. We fast forwarded through the last half hour–the kind of thing you can only do with a subtitled movie.

The best thing about silent movies: you can play your own soundtrack. The resolution is still a crock (”the heart must mediate between the head and the hands”) , but there are tons of iconic & breathtaking images in this. The new US DVD release looks better than any other version I’ve ever seen, too.

We had watched this Alain Delon Ripley adaptation half a year ago… but I just rented it from Netflix again anyway. Yes, it’s true: this movie left so little of an impression that I completely forgot seeing this until I popped it in the player. So, retroactively, it’s getting downgraded to two stars.
