And God Created Woman

January 30th, 2008

So this is why they invented the phrase “va-va-voom!” The second most pleasant surprise about this film is the ending, which eschews the usual moralizing. Take note, Smiley Face: just because you have a female main character who behaves comme un animal sauvage (sexually or herbally) doesn’t mean you have to make her pay for it. Guess that’s what makes And God Created Woman such a libertine landmark. But why don’t we leave the analysis to Chuck Stephens and ogle Bardot in the trailer instead? This movie would make a fine double-feature with Le Gendarme de St. Tropez.

Et Dieu…créa la femme. Roger Vadim, 1956. ****

Good thing blogging isn’t a competitive sport, Kevin, because you certainly posted and screengrabbed me into the ground. That’s a nice & meaty post, and the video essay deserves to be embedded rather than just linked.

I’m not sure I agree with you on the ending/racist (sub)text though. Seems to me that the film isn’t asking us to join in Curd Jurgens’ and Jean-Louis Trintignant’s horror at the interracial mambo — it’s merely showing it, which isn’t the same as judging it. BB is acting out, and we see what it does to her admirers, but nowhere is it indicated that we are supposed to be on their side. I like to think that if I’d been in that basement, I would have shook a leg with BB instead of reaching for my gun….

Counterexample: Erika Christensen in Soderbergh’s Traffic. Now that struck me as racist.
