[...] Far from being non-narrative or dull, L’Avventura is loaded with tension. The black and white cinematography is gorgeous and deliberate, and even on the surface, the mystery of Anna (Lea Massari), who disappears on a cruise to a volcanic island, is intriguing. The questionable relationship that develops between Anna’s caddish fiancé Sandro (Gabriele Ferzetti) and her best friend Claudia (Monica Vitti) is ripe with complex undercurrents of desire, guilt, and despair. And if that’s not enough, you can ponder Antonioni’s masterful play with audience expectations, moral judgments, and narrative/cinematic conventions. If Paglia remembers L’Avventura as “plotless,” what does she make of Apichatpong Weerasethakul or Inland Empire? [...]

Rob,

English subtitles are mentioned only in reference to the scenes where Polish is spoken. I did notice the lack of English subtitles for the hard-of-hearing, however.

still reeling from seeing it the first time, just now.
what a mind-f*ck. i love it!

I just purchased the US release of the dvd and have just started it and already love it - I will write more later - BUT the one thing confusing me is that it mentions on the jewel case having English subtitles. I found none in evidence. What I did find is two (2) French subtitle choices. Is this a defective dvd? More later...

Can't wait. Wish I could get my hands on some press/advance copy... I promoted/proselytized/adored, too, didn't I? Oh well. Guess I'll just have to support one of my favorite directors in this, one of his boldest leaps (artistically and financially both) yet. Altho, to be honest, it seems weird to think about other footage being free to see. I like it pretty perfect as it is right now...
