Flannel Pajamas

April 19th, 2007

Dullsville. In Jeff Lipsky’s story of a marriage, talk talk talk does not add up to plot or character. Justin Kirk and Julianne Nicholson play thoroughly unremarkable people doing thoroughly unremarkable things; then they break up. Occasional gestures toward kitchen sink realism are undermined by clumsy, overwritten dialogue that doesn’t go anywhere and leaves us feeling nothing. Who are these people, and who cares? Justin Kirk is wasted; Flannel Pajamas is 124 minutes long.

Jeff Lipsky is a professional putz. His movies go past sucking, past being good for so brazenly sucking, back to plain old sucking again.

I have no idea why he keeps getting funded.

Actually, I do have an idea — I know he has been a big macher in film distribution for years. On his resume you’ll see how he used to run October Films and hung with Casavettes, but I am sure he’s also made a secret mint in trade on B crap to Asia or something & he’s got a lot of friends with pockets who slip him a mil every few years as a thank you. That has to be it.
