Battlestar Galactica, Season 2
June 19th, 2006
Wednesday morning, 5:30am: can Commander Adama escape the Cylons this time? Yes, I’m seriously addicted, but now it’s over until the start of season 3 in October. This paranoid and claustrophobic series is narrative crack, and it takes the classic relationship troubles between humans and artificial intellgence (think Blade Runner) to the next level: now they reincarnate, and there are robot-human triangles and worse. No, this isn’t Shakespeare, but it’s compelling as all frack. The season finale is just about brilliant.

So after hooking you on the pilot, I finally started watching season 1 - the first one, where the Cylons are attacking every 33 minutes, was so intense my legs were shaking, but then…..meh. The whole water crisis thing made no sense. If they lost 60% of their water, and that meant they’d run out in a few days, then they were already in a lot of trouble since we’re to assume they’ll be flying around for months or years. And the universe is full of icy comets, so there’s water everywhere. And once they start explaining things (”his colony was exploited!) it gets all wooden.
They just killed off 13 pilots, so maybe it’ll get better again….

It took me a little while to get sucked in good & proper, and not every episode is gold. But about halfway through the season, there was no turning back.
I’ll have to say that so far, season 3 does nothing for me. The topical stuff is getting way too heavy-handed and the drama is at such a high pitch that I can barely take it. I’ll give it another episode or two, and if it doesn’t pick up, I might be done with Starbuck & Co. Season 2 was great stuff though.
