The Sixth Annual Jammys

April 21st, 2006

Whaddaya know, I didn’t go–I promised myself never to see moe. headline anything again. Sounds like it was a fun time anyway, especially the Dweezil Zappa stuff, but I don’t mind hanging on to my fifty bucks.

Dweezil Zappa is a big friggin waste of talent. He is an incredible guitar player (I’m gonna YouSendIt you a track where he sits in w/ his Dad’s band live) but doesn’t record any music. Far as I can tell - he is “in charge” of his Dad’s vault. Which is a noble thing to be in charge of, but, man. . .dude can wail.

I’ll listen to the tune you sent as soon as Marcy’s out of the house.

Dweezil’s touring as Zappa Plays Zappa this summer… at the Beacon in June perhaps? Dan says his thing was great, and Chick Corea sat in with him. Relix had an interview with Gail where she talks about the Zappa vault; for some legal reason, they are about to release a lot more stuff than before.

They shut down the Zappa torrent sites a while back but there are still Zappa torrents. It’s all hit or miss. Some of the stuff is pretty awful sound quality and mostly horsing around on stage, which is always funny, but has limits in terms of listenability. But then when you get a good one, or even just one good song…oh man…unbelievable.

Check out this torrent, three discs of Zappa soundboard with lots of soloing throughout, most songs clocking in at 10-15 mins. And 74 is a very good year. And the night before is also posted. I jumped on it when it there were 30 seeders (there are still about 20) and it took me less than an hour to download.

They are starting to post Zappa at this site. It’s mostly GD but there’s good jazz there too…
