I’d dabbled in Joseph Campbell before, but this is the book that first put him on the map. It’s outstanding, not just for the scholarship and theory of the monomyth, but also for Campbell’s unbridled joy in telling stories. If you think his PBS series with Bill Moyers is fairly interesting, this is the hardcore stuff.
